Ravensworth Castle. 18 Febry. 1740/1 To Wm. Corbett Esq. Sir We reced. the Boards Minutes of the 3d Inst and shall duly observe them. Inclosed is our cash accot. for the Month Jan 1 last by which please to observe there is a Ballance in favour of the Hospital of £409-6-6 ¾ . We have also Inclosed you our Conting.t Accot. for Three Months Ending 31 Dec. last amounting to £84-6-6 which we desire you will lay before the Board for their aprobation thereof. As Simon Drydons pretended right of Common upon Grindon for his Lands of Moss Kennell and Howdon We have often Enquired into it and have always been told by the oldest Tenants in that Nighbourhood upon the Derwentwater Estate that hes had none, nor did these Enjoy any Common right that he purchased off tho. they to Establish his, Conveys a right to him. About 3 years agoe his goods was impounded for depasturing upon Grindon Common & he Replevened them and Said he would Try it, but proceeded no further and at that time Sr. Edwd. Blackett who has an Estate Joyning off.rd to Joyne the Commissioner in a Sute against him. This affair will more fully appear from a Representation or petition the freeholders (who have a Right) and the Tenants intend to draw up and send the Board and which we hope will be done in a little time. Mr Jefferson who is a very Troublesome uncertain Man has often promised us he would pay the £19-14-10d for the Wood & bark he Cutt down from off his Customary Estate at Thornthwaite, but at the same desired time to apply to the board for the same abatement of the Charge a Copy of the particulars are Inclosed. We will in a post or Two send the board a True State of case relating the Petty Tyths off East Thornton so farr as we know, and Also where or by what means Mr Moore the late Incumbents Tenant prevailed in the sute against the Hospital we are Sr Your vey Hble Serts NW & HB [The table of contingent payments is given in the PDF of this document.]
