Letter – Nicholas Walton to William Corbett – 22 Mar 1741

      Ravensworth Castle. March 22nd . 1740

To William Corbett Esqr.



Sir

      We have in Obedience to the Boards Commands examined into the Claim Mr Drydon makes to a right on Grindon Common, by Virtue of his Estate of Mosskennell & Hawden Lands, and in order to lay before the Board the Clearest accot. of it we can; You have Inclosed a Petition of the Tenant & Severall  Affadivetts relating thereto, by all which it appears that he has never Enjoyed a Common right as is setforth in. his Petition, And we Verrily believe his Claim is without the least Colour of right at all. The Petition affadivitts we hope will make it Clear to the Board to which we begg leave to referr. Sir Edward Blackett has a right upon the above mentioned Common and has promised to Signifie to the Board that he will Joyn with the Hospittal in the Expence of Any Suit which may be Comenced  by Mr Drydon in relation to the right he now Claimes. 

      We reced. Yesterday a Letter from Mr Radley relating the Derw[entwat]er Woods which we will Answer next post, & hope to give him an Accot. of An offer which we Expect will be made for those in Northumberland Exceeding Mr Chrisops £500 or more & we have made some stepps towards the Advancing those in Cumberland likewise

      In ours of the 17.Apr.1737 we wrote you that we Apprehended an Estate of £280 per ann. at Amble in North.d  was the right of the Hospital, to which Letter we begg leave to referr & to observe that no person has reced the Rent these three Years & that we still are of Oppiniuon that it may be worth the Boards Enquiring after & we are
