Ravensworth Castle 6 May 1740 To William Corbett Esqr. Sir Inclosed is an acct. & a Computation of the value of the Wood Cutt by the Thornthwaite Ten[an]ts from off their Arbitrary Estates, as near as we (upon the strictest Enquiring) can gett it amounting in the whole to £34:12:6, to which we have added 16s to Mr Simpsons Law Charges for drawing Instructions for an Information against Mr Jefferson, please to Inform us what Law Charges the Board will please to Charge Mr Jefferson with that was occationed at London; so as we may be able to make up the whole Expence he is to pay. He pleads hard and hopes still that the Board will favour him as he has so Quietly given up and indeed it is a point gain’d where there might have been a Teadious Law Suit please to observe what he says in the <uses> of the Wood. We have made a demand upon all the Rest of the Ten.ts that have Cutt any, they Refuse to pay & we have Imployed Mr Simpson Attorney at Law to Write a Sevear Letter to Each of them, to threaten them to pay but not to <...> any, & what Effect these Letter will have we cannot tell, but we shall Acquaint the Board of it as soon as we know. Inclosed is also a valuation of Damage done Robt. Dixon farmer of Peacock House farm by a flood of Devils Water in the year 1734. We have viewed the place which is now mostly Covered with Stones & Rubbage left upon the Land. He is very poor, & has Certainly suffered by that flood but whether to the Value of £15 we cannot now be so certain, being so Long Since as 1734 & before our time, but he hopes the Board will Consider & allow him the £15 he has often spoke to us about it, but we always Refused troubling the Board with it till he gott the value of the Damage under the hands of some substancetiall neighbours we are Sr Your very Hble Servts N. Jefferson viz. Cutt 5 Oak Trees from of Logill Tenemt. the Wood & Bark Valued by Isaac Todd & John Wilson to £5 8 0 Cutt 2 Trees & Sold them for the use of a Furnace at Clifton 3 0 0 Cutt 1 Oak Tree valued by Mr Pearson 15 0 For ab t. 200 Birch & Alder Trees sold Wm. Miles of Keswick in the year 1735 6 19 6 NB Mr Jefferson now pretends that he will use the most pt. of the 5 trees valued £5:8:0 in Repairing his Tenement & that he did but sell the 2 trees to Clifton Furnace for £2:2:0 and lastly hopes the Com[missioner]s will not Desire him to Refund the £6:12:6 as he calls it only Underwood £15 15 6 Thomas Graves Mr Jeffersons Tenant viz. Crop’d a good many Trees at Thornthwaite & peeld them & sold the Bark for £1 Crop’d other two Trees & sold the Bark for 3 0 £1 3 0 Geo: Birkett sold to Andr. Green Wood off Becksides Tenement, value abt 10 0 0 John Fleming took away Cropings of Wood & Bark valued 5 0 Hugh Tolson sold of Birch & Alderwood from of Beckstones Tenement value abt 4 0 0 Frances Lancaster viz. Cutt down 6 or 7 small trees from Hallgarth Tenement valued at £1:1:0 and the Bark at 7s 1 8 0 Cutt down soe many Hedge Row Oak Trees as she sold the Bark for £1 & the Trees value £1:1:0 2 1 0 £3 9 0 Total £34 12 6 To which Add Mr Thomas Simpsons Bill of Law Charges on the Reverd’ Mr Thos. Jeffersons Acct. 16 4 £35 8 10 A Copy sent the Board 6 May 1740 Wid.w Frances Lancaster in one of Pearsons Letters is charged for Felling 7 oak trees value £1, exclusive of the Bark wch we are apt to believe is the same with the first article she is charged with.
