Letter – Nicholas Walton to William Peters – 17 Mar 1793

Dear Sir

       I am this Day favoured with your letter of the 15th Instant. Tomorrow I have no doubt Mr Fryer will be with you unless some accident sh[oul]d prevent that. I think Sir Edwd Blackett has acted very strongly. Every attention has be paid to him and neither he or any one for him has ever given an answer to anything for or against and tho’ he has acknowledged the rec[eip]t of your Letter and the Bills it appears that we cannot say whether he has any or no opinion at all about the Business respecting Grindon and Thorngrafton Divisions. I speak from recollection but <tho> Sir Edwd says his Interest in Grindon is very small his Rental is £<11> P[er]ann[um] and his Rental in Thorngrafton is just £9 short of double. I observe with concern what you intimate relative to the Bishop and I think the sooner that matter was considered the better & consequently that it was very proper in you to determine to see to Mr Everest when you had such an intimation. It w[oul]d be hard indeed to lose our Bills when all Persons interested in the right of Common are consenting except it may be Sir Edwd Blackett who will not oppose and two Proprietors at Haydon Bridge one of whom says he is for the Division of Grindon but that he never will sign any paper again as long as life is in him & he knows what he is doing, because he signed away an Estate w[hi]ch ought otherwise to have belonged to him and the other who refuses signing says that he cares not whether there is a Division or not but that he thought by signing he w[oul]d make his Estate in respect of which he has Common right liable to be Mortgaged or Sold for payment of Expences. The circumstance as to the Bishop makes it necessary to be less rigid with respect to the Cypher but as to this every thing will be fully considered by you and Mr Everest and if the Sheep Clause was struck out of Grindon Bill it w[oul]d be well as it w[oul]d remove considerably of the Vicar’s objection. I am so very indfferently  tonight that I must request you to communicate the contents of this Letter to Mr Everest & that

you will desire him to be so good as excuse my writing to him.

PS For certain occasions I wish you not to have a further Letter of Credit yet. When you see the Money to be wanted let me hear & there shall be no delay

       Under the circumstance of the intimation relative to the Bishops will it not be necessary to be careful in not advancing too much Money on back of Fees etc.  What is necessary however must be paid but I beg you will consult Mr Everest about this. If it sh[oul]d be thought right to admit the Claim as to the Rent of £6.19.8 perhaps the sooner the better as it might be the cause of getting the assistance of his Grace the Duke of Northumberlands Friends.
