Dear Brother,

I must own I did expect a letter from you according to your promise long ere I got one but that is over and I am glad you had a good journey and that my Sister you and the family are all well twas a great pity your two Sons was oblig’d to move so soon after you got to warwick but am exceeding glad Mr wise was able to goe the journey. the family at Brampton was I believe somewhat disapointed but the next is to be a Son my little godson dined at Branton last Sunday and Is very well their Child went to Rokely that day and Lady Tanckred sends me word She never has her own Comes over but ou<rs> Comes likewise everything goes well at Newby and I have desir’d the overman to write every perticular affair I wod have done It for him but he thinks the gardiner Can doe It better that Is he Can give his account of Matters with more freedom So has given a direction to you your hay Is finished and got very well I’me told twill be a drugg to great planty and a very good time to get It In hithertoe my Brother wise receives your Complements in the name of the Skelton Clubb and returns them heartily and will doe It In a a full body and <bumser> next monday which day I desire to give him the key of the seller to look at the hogshead of wine as he goes by he tels me I choose a proper day to save your Liquor for as he is goeing to quench his thirst at Skelton he won’t do It at Newby I have not seen the face of Mr Sharp since I came to Ripon and but once at Newby after you went away Mr Guest Is Just come after a long expectation for It’s been said next week ever since I came to ripon Ile take care to carry my sister Blacketts debt to her very soon yours to Mr Savill is discharg’d and likewise the Interest due to him but all I Could Say and write an assignment was to be which and the bond I shod be glad to have down I’ve had writings down again I have assig’d masters mortgage to I know not who the 500 pounds I got In my Corporation affair made up my sum bravely So that’s over I Shall surprise you with an account of anthony that wod have bought Mulworth was found drown’d two days agoe In a water a quarter deep he went to take a walk from his own house and was grown feeble and his foot slipt of a bank and tis suppos’d pitched on his head and was found In the water his stick was on the bank and they see where his foot had slipt I know you don’t love long Letters but I Could not give over talking but I Can’t yet give over till I assure my Sister I shall have satisfaction In a Letter from her without a frank and likewise of every opportunity of assuring her and your self I’me allwais affectionately to both Aletheia Blackett

Dear Brother I had forget to tell you Sr Edward lost his main by two battles I beg my most humble service to all the family at warwick and pray give Jacky his little Letter adue. witt is this moment Come here and tells me Mr Sharp writ you a fortnight agoe and the over man will after he has bought In some Cattle, your hay Is not all got In a shower of rain beat them of we had none here but Monday I guess will Compleat If your thousands of bricks Is led Into the place  you orderd Mrs aisliby always desires her service to you and Sister Blackett Mr aisliby Is goeing to build a town as some Say





My Dear Jackey I thank you for your kind remembrance of me and the wild man tels me of two dragons that Is In the wood near our house So I desire that youl provide your self with long swords and very sharp the wild man has got three speers and a long gun so ti’s now time to ask your brother harry to whome my blessing attends whether he’l come to this sharp engagement the bird still complains of her leg you broke but the sweet butterfly Is wishing you a full victory over the draggons and So does Your Affectionate aunt Aletheia my Service to Mrs mason

Jacky was John Erasmus Blackett (1728-1814). Mention of Lady Tancred dates the letter to after September 1734, when Aletheia was married to Waldegrave Tancred of Brampton Hall, Boroughbridge, Yorks, and after which time Jacky was perhaps old enough to take on the dragons in the wood. The Tancred’s already had several daughters by the time Frances was baptised in about 1736, so the letter is assigned a date that summer. The hay harvest was often as late as August, so 12th August is used here
