Dear Sir

Yours of the 6th Inst came to Hand in due course. I will endeavour in future to furnish you with Sel[ecte]d ref[ine]d l[ea]d of the mark AN WB 1 as much as possible. As to Slag Lead we have not at present on hand as much as will meet our engagements but if you be in immediate want will contrive to furnish with one Keel the quality of which I trust you will approve. We shall have a supply in a short time. We do not make Litharge of a second quality, but can furnish you with an article of the first rate much superior to any other that can be produced in the trade.

I am sorry to say the Lead Market here is so much upon a par with you that I trust the present hostile appearance may create a movement amongst the buyers.

Mr Johnson requests me to inquire your prices for lead pipe each 1In & 11/2 In & the weight per yard of each also as it is probable he may have an order to give you. Your early reply will obliged Der Sir Yours Truly

       Geo Backhouse

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
