Mr Thomas Emerson Newcastle 17th Decr 1799

 New House near Stanhope Weardale

Mr Thos Emerson	By not having an Account sent me in Time of the Land Tax paid by Colonel Beaumont for the Weardale Mines he has lost the Opportunity of redeeming the Land Tax which was his Intention & the Bishop of Durham takes the Advantage of that Neglect, and will make the Purchase himself as you will see by the inclosed;

You must therefore answer the several Queries except the last (which Mr Mowbray must know as well as myself) and enclose the Paper to him at Durham. I am etc J.E.B

I have purchased more Rye for the Workmen which I hope will satisfy them, but realy I have always found the Weardale Miners etc the most disatisfied unreasonable & Turbulent Set of Workmen in the Concern.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
