Mr Thomas Emerson NCastle 19 January 1799 Newhouse, Weardale Durham In a letter that I had from Mr Mowbray he appears to be hurt that nothing was said by you at the Meeting in favour of the Division, which he said caused it to be thought that Col Beaumont was not Friendly to the measure & requested me to write to you & set that matter right, I acquainted him that in case of there being an express Clause in the Bill that Col Beaumont (as Lessee under the Lord Bishop of Durham) should not be subject to pay any Damage whatever for Working etc etc in the stinted Pastures, that he would have no objection to the Division, I now understand that it is consented to, that such Clause shall be inserted in which case, Col. Beaumont will not give the Bill the least opposition. I observe by the Gunpowder Notes that a much larger proportion has been got last year from Reedman & Hall, than from Chris Blackett; I desire for the future that you may take the one half of your Gunpowder from the latter, as I know that it is Col. B[eaumon]t’s wish. I am Etc J E B Sir Hedworth Williamson was with me this morning & is very desirous of having an answer respecting his application to Col Beaumont for liberty of Working etc in his leasehold Property about 400 Yards, Mr Emerson Jr. is fully informed of the particulars of the request & it was agreed at the former Meeting at Hexham that Mr Crawhall & Mr Dickinson & himself should take a View of that part of the Newlandside Mine, & to make their Report in writing to Col Beaumont as to the propriety of granting such liberty that Col Beaumont may be enabled to give an answer to Sir Hedworth Williamson.
