Mr Thomas Emerson Newcastle 2nd July 1799 New House Weardale Mr Thomas Emerson I am much surprized & concerned to find that Mr Purvis (who is employed equally for Col. Beaumont as for Mr. Wilson) met with a backwardness from you in giving him that Assistance & Information respecting Harehope Gill Lead Mine which he had reason to expect from you as Col. Beaumonts Agent, & that a Paper which you or your Son had been desired to preserve with Care (it being of material Consequence in the Cause) could not be found, & Mr Purvis was told that it was supposed the Maid Servant had burnt it; If this is the Case & the Persons employed have not that full Assistance & Advice of the Agents, it can not be expected that Col. Beaumont can succeed in the Cause, which he will of concern attribute to the Backwardness etc of yourself & Son, owing to your near Connection with some of the Lessees; I had not this information from Mr Wilson, neither do I believe that he is informed of it. I do beg that every Assistance may be given to the Gentlemen of the Law employed by Col. Beaumont & Mr Wilson in this Cause, which will prevent any unfavourable impression to your Disadvantage, I am etc J. E. B. You will please shew this letter to Mr. J. Bell when he comes up on Thursday or Friday.
