Col Beaumont Newcastle 27 Decr 1799 Bretton Hall Wakefield Yorkshire Dr Sir I am favoured with your letters of the 22d & 23d Inst inclosing a Copy of your letter to Thos Emerson & Mr Bells letter of the 22d Inst: the former may I hope have a proper effect; From what Mr Bell writes I am of opinion that it will be advisiable that your Subscription towards the supply of Corn to the Poor of Hexham at a reduced Price should be £100 I have wrote to Mr Bell accordingly & desired that he would immediately subscribe that Sum in your Name. I hope that your letter to the Bishop of Durham respectg the purchase of your Land tax in Weardale may have its due weight. The Demand made on you by the Widow of J Prindle is certainly very ill founded, as all your Lead Agents can testify: Mr Bell, Isaac Hunter & Westgarth are to be with Mr Williamson, Mr Heron and Mr Anthy Surtees on an early day when that matter will be fully examined into; altho’ the Claim on you is for Carriage of Lead in the Years 1794, 1795, & 1796, no Claim or Demand whatever on that Account has been made on me (as your Agent) by the late John Pringle, his Widow or any Person concerned for her, until the Receipt of Saml Castle’s letter of the 19th Inst nor did I ever hear of any Claim that J Pringle or his Widow had on you till Mr Anty Surtees informed me on the 5th or 6th: she may put you to some trouble & expense but it is not possible she can succeed in her demand. I have purchased upwards of 25 Lasts of Dantzick Rye for your Workmen & Six Lasts for the Poor of Hexham, since which the Price has considerably advanced & it will be higher it is thought I am etc J.E.B
