T R Beaumont Esqr Newcastle 4th Jany 1796 M.P. Portman square London Dear Sir I wrote to you yesterday but omitted acquainting you that on informing Mr Carr that you intended allowing him from the 1st Octr last £40 per Year in lieu of the 5% paid him by each Workman, & £20 per Ann[um] for Teach[in]y School, he having the benifit of the Quarter pence, & being at the charge of paying an Assistant; Mr Carr submits to what you may please to direct, but at the same time wishes to give up the School to the present Assistant you allowing him £50 per Ann[um] instead of £40 the Masters Allowance from you to be £15 per Ann[um] & to have the benifit of the Quarter pence, Mr Carr satisfied me that the income arising from the living of Allendale does not exceed £50 per Ann[um] out of which he pays a Curate; he said that as he was advanced in Years he could wish to resign the living of Allendale & the Curacy of Allenheads, in case he could obtain a living in the Diocese of the value of £90 or even £80 per Ann[um]: but this he submits to your consideration; I would beg leave of you to comply with Mr Carr’s request of allowing him to give up the School, on your making his allowance £50 per Ann[um]. All that is necessary for the Boys to be taught is reading, Writing, & the Common Rules of Arithmetick, which the present Assistant (I am informed) is capable of doing; when the Boys are instructed in Mensuration, Trigonometry etc it frequently unfits them for Miners, they sometimes get into the Excise, & in case of being discharg’d for neglect Etc they turn Poachers. I am with respect Dear Sir Yours etc JEB Should the Parents of the Boys incline that their Sons should be instructed further, & the Master is capable of doing it, it is reasonable that he should be paid by them something extra.
