Welbeck Street 15th July Dr Mrs Beaumont, I returned a few days ago from my Yorkshire & Devonshire tour by way of Bath &c. I got your of the 10th yesterday. I am sorry you go so soon. The neighbouring farmers will regret your absence. You do not mention the garden. I hope it produced you some good fruit & presented by the present gardener with a better grace than it was by the late surly one. When changing Horses at Sheffield I spoke to Mr West who was doing the same. I proposed getting to York that night. Mr W was going for London – I suppose to get his lease. I thought from what he said that Old one was out. I told him that I did not desire a better tenant. I knew Mr West’s uncle very well when a boy, but saw little of him after our family removed to Thorpe. My father had a great opinion of him. I never had an opportunity of forming an Opinion of Mr West till now, & now I have formed one greatly – greatly to his disadvantage. I never associated with Mr Wn hardly ever in his company. He had a most Vulgar manner & accent. Do you his neighbour think him a man of the world or an Interesting Companion? He has no more Claim on me than other farmers. He has acted under my most excellent friend Mr Hall & now you see how lucky I am in having Mr Hall & & not a couple of West’s.
