Witness Deposition – Isaac Hunter to Henry Richmond – 7 Dec 1764

Sir

I have been upon the other parts of the Road between Blaydon and Edmonbiers, and find them so bad that I think there’s not the least doubt but one may indict both the East and the West End of Woodhead Quarter of The Township of Newlands on the West and the Quarter of Chople [Chopwell?] on the East, but I cannot hear of any (as yet) that can speak to the repairing of that part within the Quarter of Chople by statute work; and there is a Lane leading from Swallowell’s Lane to Hedley Fell (which is now made use of from the other being so bad) that some says is the Highway, tho the other has always been enjoyed. But there is a piece of Road in Woodhead Quarter, in the Grounds of one Fewster of the Holings Tenant to Ld. Northumberland that is not passable, but the Tenant has allowed the Draughts all this year to leave the Road and go up a Rigg of his Corn Land adjoining without any acknowledgment  which piece of way lyes between Swallowell’s Lane & Thompson’s who both have stopt. If you think this can be  indicted would save trouble &c as the other places are in different country’s – will sending two or three fothrs’ of Lead to Blaydon along the above Roads, before Christmas answer as well as any other carriage?



That you might the easier comprehend me have inclosed a sort of sketch of the Road – shall give you an accot. as to Woodcroft &c next week.
